A one-handed beggar who pushed a woman passenger returning from work out of a passenger train at night when she resisted molestation and subsequently raped and killed her while she was lying injured near the railway track was awarded death sentence by a fast track court here on Friday.

Foetus senses mother's psychological state

The fetus growing inside the mother's womb not only hears her heartbeat or the music she might play to her belly, but also gets signals about her mental state through the placenta, which effects the baby's development after birth, a new study has found.
 Curt A. Sandman, Elysia P. Davis, and Laura M. Glynn from the University of California-Irvine, who study how the mother's psychological state affects a developing fetus, recruited pregnant women and checked them for  depression before and after they gave birth.
The researchers also gave their babies tests after they were born to see how well they were developing.

Kingfisher in troubled waters 130 pilots quit, 149 flights cancelled

The actual reason for the huge chaos among  Kingfisher flyers across India became apparent on Thursday as the airline put its figures on the table.
While Kingfisher claimed it was cancelling 50 flights every day till November 19, in reality, it operated only 269 flights of its allocated winter schedule of 418 daily flights on Thursday.

Rupee loses 3 paise to 30-month low of Rs 50.20 per US dollar

The Indian rupee fell by 3 paise to a 30-month low of Rs 50.20 per US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange today on sustained demand for the American currency from banks and importers.
The domestic currency had tumbled by 70 paise to Rs 50.17/18 per dollar in the previous session amid dollar demand from banks and importers and firmness of the American currency overseas.

Bhanwari Devi case: CBI grills former Rajasthan Minister

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday interrogated the former Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) minister of Rajasthan, Mahipal Maderna in the abduction of Bhanwari Devi case.
Bhanwari (36), posted as an Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife (ANM) at a sub-centre in Jaliwada village, around 120 km from Jodhpur, has been missing since September 1. Her husband Amarchand had alleged that she was abducted at the behest of former Rajasthan minister Mahipal Maderna and his associates. The charges were denied by Maderna, who was sacked by Rajasthan chief minister  Ashok Gehlot on October 16. CBI had not questioned Maderna until today.

Mahindra Satyam posts 10-fold growth in Q2 PAT to Rs 238 crore

IT firm Mahindra Satyam today posted a 10-fold growth in profit-after-tax to Rs 238 crore for the second quarter of the 2011-12 financial year.
The company's profit-after-tax stood at Rs 23.31 crore in the July-September quarter of the 2010-11 fiscal. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, Mahindra Satyam's profit-after-tax was up 5.77 per cent from Rs 225 crore in Q1, FY'12. The company's consolidated revenues surged by 27.01 per cent during the quarter under review to Rs 1,578 crore from Rs 1,242.4 crore in the corresponding period a year ago. Women alcoholics suffer quicker brain damage

Women alcoholics suffer damage to the part of their brain that controls moods, impulses and sleep three times faster than their male counterparts, a Swedish study showed today.
Women suffer a 50 per cent reduction in the so-called serotonin function in their brain after four years of excessive drinking, while men show the same amount of damage after 12 years of alcohol abuse, according to the study by researchers at Gothenburg University.

Teenagers who engage in shift work may be at risk for multiple sclerosis due to a disruption in their circadian rhythm and sleep pattern, Swedish researchers say.
Dr. Anna Karin Hedstrom and colleagues from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm analyzed data from two population-based studies—one with 1343 incident cases of MS and 2900 controls and another with 5129 prevalent MS cases and 4509 controls.

Breast Cancer victims have to wait long for diagnosis

Thousands of women with breast cancer suffer delays of up to five months for a diagnosis because their symptoms are missed by GPs, according to a study.
It found that for one in ten patients, there was a 20-week delay between first being seen by a GP and being told they have the disease.
While those visiting their doctors with obvious signs such as a lump may be diagnosed sooner, many go to GPs with more subtle symptoms such as tiredness, weight loss or anaemia.

Mobile number portability demand outstrips new users

The much-hyped mobile number portability (MNP) might appear to have been a damp squib but a closer look at the data reveals a different picture. Porting requests are now almost thrice as many as new users, making them the most important determinant of changing market shares for operators.
