Rs. 1,000 Coins in India
Indians are lamenting the end of an era with the eventual phasing out of the 25 paise coin also known to millions endearingly as the chawanni. The proposal to introduce Rs. 1,000 coins into the Indian currency system received Government approval on 11th August, 2011. The country will now have coins of the Rs 1,000 variety. Why did India suddenly need such a large-denomination coin out of the blue?
