Government lifts ban on onion exports
Less than two weeks after imposing a ban on the export of onions, the government on Tuesday yielded to pressure from Maharashtra government and farmers, revoked the ban and decided to continue with a minimum export price of $475 per tonne to discourage exports for augmenting domestic supply.
“The EGoM decided to revoke the ban on exports of onions and decided that there will be an MEP of $475 a tonne,” Food Minister K V Thomas told reporters after the meeting of Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM), chaired by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
The export of onions was banned on September 9 when the prices of the commodity touched Rs 25 per kg in the retail market of some metros. The decision attracted protests from onion growers in Maharashtra and Karnataka with Maharashtra government petitioning the Centre to review the ban.
