Reservation policy leading to Divisive Politics
The constitution framers of India envisaged quotas as time-bound in the hope that the development will trickle down. What started as an instrument for promoting socio-economic upliftment turned into a tool of competitive populism? It does not come as a surprise when politicians shout for quotas with the motive of swelling the vote banks. State chief minister Mayawati demands quotas for Muslims, significantly taking care to recommend the same for upper caste poor. It does not end here. To endorse herself as a a champion of “sarvjan” constituency the lady in power wishes quota to move beyond government jobs and educational institutions and to be followed in the merit-based private sector as well.
Congress cannot leave such a promising prospect behind. As Congress looks forward to an electoral revival in the state, it can’t just watch and lag behind in gathering the precious Muslim vote. Since 20% of UP’s population comprises of Muslims they become all the more important. As if on cue, Union law and minority affairs minister Salman Khurshid has said the UPA is for more details....
