Rural women taking to BPO in Haryana


A few months ago many girls of Haryana spent most of her time in cooking food, looking after cattle and labouring in the field. This is the everyday work of women in Haryana. Now the things have changed. The women who were confined to the drudgery of domestic chores can be found today sitting in an office working away furiously in front of a computer.
Is it a dream? Seeing and realizing the deep patriarchal set-up in the villages, one finds it hard to believe that these women can join offices.
Today, this is the path-breaking reality of hundreds of women in Tikli and Aklimpur villages. Their agrarian way of life has not changed– they still cut fodder for their cattle and clear the cow dung– but they are now equally adept at using a computer. The fodder carrying women are now working in a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) centre, which has set up shop in the heart of their village.
