UN must not be marginalised by Group of 20 leading world economies
The outgoing president of the General Assembly has urged all countries not to let the United Nations become marginalised by "new actors" like the Group of 20 leading world economies.
Joseph Deiss said in his farewell speech to the 193- member world body that these new players in"global governance"may at times be more effective than the UN or the General Assembly but they are "lacking in legitimacy."
The former Swiss foreign minister said the General Assembly initiated a dialogue with leaders of the G-20 which must continue, but he said other ways must be found"to bestow full legitimacy on G-20 decisions."
