Decriminalising Attempt to Suicide

A man tries to end his life because of poverty, debt or some loss. Can we call such an individual a criminal? Yes, says Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code 1860, condemning “whoever attempts to commit suicide”  to “simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both.”
After a history of appeals and repeals the government is yet again thinking of decriminalising an attempt to suicide. The government intends to remove section 309 of the Indian Penal Code that punishes attempt to suicide with one-year simple imprisonment for more details....
