India Celebrates Eid al-Adha

India celebrates Eid-al-Adha, the Muslim festival of sacrifice. Eid, also known as the “Feast of the Sacrifice,”  is one of the most important Muslim holidays and is marked by extensive pre-festive shopping.
The festival marks the day Muslims believe Abraham showed willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael to God as an act of devotion. God, who ordered the sacrifice, then spared Ishmael. On Eid, Muslims world-wide pay tribute to Abraham with the ceremonial slaughtering of an animal, usually a goat or a lamb. Celebratory dinners typically follow. Part of butchered animal is donated to feed the poor.
Eid falls on the last day of the Hajj, the ritual pilgrimage for more details....
