Rare solar eclipse of 21st century to be seen in the sky.
The solar eclipse on January 15 will be a rare and beautiful sight in the new year, when 92 per cent of the sun gets eclipsed by the moon, leaving only a thin annulus or bangle like shining ring in the sky.
This sight, however, can be seen only from the southern most tip of India, near Kanyakumari. Moreover, this annular eclipse lasts for some eleven minutes, one of the longest, a Birla Science Centre release said here today.
From Hyderabad and other places, however, we can see a partial solar eclipse, when about 77 per cent of the sun would be covered by the moon. The eclipse would begin at 11.30 am, IST and would gradually grow, reaching a maximum at 1.32 pm IST in the afternoon. After that the eclipse will begin to withdraw and would be over by 3.15 pm IST.
According to the release, this is the seventh eclipse in the preceding 365-day period, that too is very rare, as seven is the maximum number of eclipses in such a period. Utmost precaution must be taken to view the eclipse. Only certified eclipse glasses or solar filters should be used. Otherwise, the projection of the event on a screen through binoculars or a telescope can be seen.
Even the projection through a pin hole camera is safe. Exposed X ray or photographic films or smoke glass are totally unsafe, the release warned.
